What The Heck Is NLP
(And Why Should We Care)?

LP is short for a very long and imposing name:
Neuro Linguistic Programming.
At first glance it obviously has something to do
with Neurology, Language and Programming. Right? I can
hear you now: “As if I don’t have enough stuff to remem-
ber already! Who needs more big words and lingo jingo?
What’s on TV tonight?”
WAIT!
Knowing more about NLP is often the very thing we
need to make our personal and professional lives (not to
mention relationships and pretty much everything else)
actually easier. Here’s a little background about NLP. (It’s
all about quick results, so I promise I’ll keep it short!)
Back in the 1970s, a graduate student in Computer
Science and Physics named Richard Bandler teamed up
with his Linguistics Professor, John Grinder, and studied
and systematized the best practices of the world’s greatest
wizards of positive change. They observed Virginia Satir,
grandmother of Family Therapy. They studied Fritz Perls,
father of Gestalt therapy. They also modeled Dr. Milton H.
Erickson, MD, father of modern Hypnotherapy. Bandler
and Grinder tossed out the theory in favor of pursuing the
subtle things these masters did to enable their clients to
enjoy fast, permanent change. Bandler, in particular, be-
came known for helping people clear phobias in—literal-
ly—minutes. Then Bandler and Grinder turned to studying
the best athletes, sales people, and business leaders with
the same methods.
They found out what worked by observing peak
performers who were getting powerful results in their
