nstead of relying on a number of
widely prescribed drugs for depres-
sion or anxiety, it is possible to use
nutrients to balance the brain and
body’s biochemistry. Because they offer
genuine relief, many patients choose
these natural and necessary nutrients.
This way they either avoid medications
or, under the supervision of a trained
physician, are able to taper off their
medication.
Amino acids, for instance, impact
brain chemistry through their effect
on the production of what are called
neurotransmitters— chemical messen-
gers in the brain and nervous system.
The amino acids tryptophan, tyrosine,
cysteine, theanine, taurine, and
gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are
used successfully in helping people’s
emotional states. Levels of these amino
acids can be checked with a simple
blood test, and supplementation to
correct imbalances can be initiated. It is
also possible to measure neurotransmit-
ters, such as serotonin, as well as other
neurotransmitter levels, through a urine
sample. Supplementation can then be
given, targeted to balance the person’s
neurochemistry.
Deficiency of a number of other
nutrients has also been correlated with
anxiety and depression. Vitamin B12,
folic acid, and essential fatty acids are
