the usual reactions of people see-
ing Mehendi body art for the first
time. Next question is, “Where
can I get it done?” One way is to
attend 1,001 Nights of Summer:
Girls’ Night Out, on September
5, with belly dance lessons, Me-
hendi, hookah, food and drinks.
The body art of choice in the U.S.
for the past ten years, Mehendi is
an ancient art, with natural henna
paste used to create intricate pat-
terns. Henna, a plant containing
a natural dye (also used to color
hair) is ground and made into a paste with essential oils for brighter stain and an
uplifting aroma. The translucent stain lasts about two weeks. Henna is most popular
in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Indian subcontinent, where Mehendi is
used to celebrate holidays, marriages and births, to bring luck, and enhance beauty.
It provides a natural alternative to tattoos requiring chemical inks, needles, and per-
manence. Mehendi is sensual and relaxing, offering harmony and contrast to the
skin, while soothing and invigorating the spirit!
1,001 Nights of Summer will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 20
Forest Street, Stamford, 7 to 10 p.m. $25 at the door, $20 preregistered. Svetlana Iyer
is a Mehendi artist and an owner of Sveta’s Mehendi in Stamford. Visit www.svetas-
mehendi.com or call 203.554.0769 for more information. See ad pg 13.
