Fionnuala Croke (EMBA 02)
business and the arts
FIONNUALA Croke (EMBA 02) was appointed keeper and head cura-
tor in the National Gallery of Ireland earlier this year. Having graduated
from UCD with a BA in History of Art and Archaeology in 1983, she
completed an MA thesis in art history in 1987 before joining the
National Gallery of Ireland the same year as curator of French paint-
ings, with responsibility for the gallery’s programme of exhibitions.
Croke was appointed head of the new exhibitions department in 2000,
in anticipation of the opening of the gallery’s Millennium Wing, at
which time she began a two-year International Executive MBA at UCD
Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
“The same business skills apply in non-profit and cultural institutions
as in the corporate world, so I was motivated to do the MBA by my
belief that museum managers and leaders should continue to learn and
update their skills,” says Croke. She subsequently attended the Museum
Leadership programme in the Getty Institute in Los Angeles in 2007,
and took up her new role as curator this year.
