electricity. In a normal transformer within the
grid, you will always see core losses of
energy. We are employing a material called
AMT (amorphous metal transformer) which
has some very special properties that mean
this core loss is significantly reduced.”
The technology has already been widely
deployed in the more developed regions of
China, and Li now hopes to see it extended to
other regions of China and indeed to other
Asian countries.
At government level, China has set itself
the target of reducing energy consumption
per unit GDP by 20% by 2010, from its 2005
figure. To help attain this goal, the
Government signed a contract with China’s
top 1,000 industrial companies in 2006 to
implement efficiency improvements. These
companies account for some 35-40% of the
country’s total energy use, according to Li,
who says that while the task is huge, China is
moving in the right direction.
