MISSISSIPPI. Whispering pines. The sounds of a single guitar. The smell of magnolia blooms. Sunset along the coast. Antebellum columns
against an evening sky. Ancient Indian mounds in the distance. Smiling faces gathered together breathing in the day. Mississippi.
Find out why authors flock to it, musicians sing about it, artists can’t leave it, sportsmen love it, daydreamers bask in it, and tourists just
have to escape to it. Mississippi is a land riddled with tales and mysteries, history and intrigue, with a past that still draws people near,
and with a future that is promising. Mississippi will offer you more than you can imagine.
THE THRILL IS HERE. Blues, country, rock ‘n roll. It all started right here. And on any given night, it’s still going strong. From the
Coast to the Delta to the northern hills, singers and musicians make juke joints, clubs and concert halls rock. Fans come from around
the world to sit down front and see the real thing-live and a-live, as we say. Novice or connoisseur, you should, too. Just look for the
neon, listen for the applause, and come on in for the show.
When we say “birthplace of America’s music,” is it merely a play on words boasting about a few locally born “naturals?” Not exactly.
Perhaps there’s something in the water, but this state has produced many of the world’s most renowned musical artists of all time
including Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Jimmie Rodgers.
FROM BLUES TO BLUE SUEDE SHOES. Begin your musical journey through Mississippi at the many museums and historical sites
that tell the true stories of how these worldwide revolutions got their start. The Mississippi Delta is the birthplace of Blues music-the
place where over 100 blues musicians and singers including Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton and B.B. King began their
careers. So, if you’re looking for a true Delta blues experience, expect just that in the clubs and juke joints.
ELVIS. NEED WE SAY MORE? Tupelo, in northeast Mississippi, is where Elvis Presley was born. Tour the small, humble two-room
shotgun house that was his childhood home. It is quite a contrast from the sequined jumpsuits and luxury cars that Elvis enjoyed as
a superstar. Adjacent to the tiny house is an impressive museum with photographs, costumes, and other memorabilia, a memorial
chapel; and park. Explore the town and retrace some of Elvis’ steps as a young man including the hardware store where he purchased
his first guitar.
THE WAR THAT SHAPED THE NATION. Some of the fiercest and bloodiest battles of the Civil War were fought on Mississippi
soil. Walking through the state’s museums and among the Civil War sites and landmarks is the only way to truly capture the bravery
and sacrifice demonstrated by so many young men. Architectural treasures still stand, providing a glimpse of how luxuriously some
Mississippians lived before the war. Among these historic sites are the intricate Longwood, the largest octagonal house in America,
and Rosalie, where you can witness the grandeur of Mississippi’s past through an informative tour by the knowledgeable hoop-skirted
guides. Both homes are in Natchez, just one of many towns that host annual pilgrimages that attract visitors from around the world.
GOURMET AND HOME GROWN. There’s no doubt about it, eating and cooking “Southern” is one of the hottest things going in
the culinary world. Connoisseurs everywhere love to come to Mississippi just to eat their way around the state. Favorites are fried catfish,
hushpuppies, and all the trimmings, or a country dinner of crispy fried chicken, farm-fresh vegetables, and crusty cornbread. In addition to
sampling the cuisine, the Viking Cooking School in Greenwood hosts several classes featuring top chefs from around the world. Learn to
cook southern delicacies yourself! On the Gulf Coast, the cuisine adopts a definitive seafood twist with restaurants and festivals serving
some of the finest fresh fish, shrimp, and oyster dishes in the world. With the high-energy nightlife and extreme sport activities, you’re sure
to work up quite an appetite, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast is the perfect place to sit back, enjoy being catered to, and savour the cuisine.
FOLLOW YOUR PASSION. REFRESH YOUR SOUL. If golf, fishing or basking in the sun, allow you to relax and enjoy your holiday,
we have the place for you. Some of the best golf courses in the South, deep-sea fishing, non-stop casino gaming action, art museums and
great entertainment year-round are found along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For a hands-on Gulf Coast experience, you will love the Biloxi
Shrimping Trip. Once aboard, you’ll see exactly how shrimp are caught while learning other fascinating facets of life on the coast.
Golfers find nirvana in Mississippi. How, you ask? By accepting the challenge of more than 140 incredible courses, many with exciting
layouts designed by the game’s legends. Take advantage of the uncrowded atmosphere, affordable packages, and superb accommodations.
Enjoy the spectacular natural beauty. And be sure to live the local life after the 18th. And with an average annual temperature of 65
degrees, you can enjoy a game any time of the year.
WE HAVE STORIES TO TELL. That may explain why writers such as William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams, Willie Morris,
John Grisham and others have been so successful. Mississippians have quite a creative streak. Witness the many artists and artisans who
grace us with their talents. While on the coast, the Walter Anderson Museum of Art is a must-see on your trip. This unique museum in
Ocean Springs is the home of exhibitions of the artist, Walter Inglis Anderson, whose paintings depict coastal wildlife in a unique and
beautiful way.
Bring your imagination and love for literature and head to Mississippi. We have produced a wealth of
internationally renowned literary giants, and their stories are often based on people and places located
in the state. Mississippi offers its travellers unique accommodation, excellent cuisine, extensive
entertainment, 24-hour casino gaming, and an experience that we are sure will leave you with a story.
