THAILAND POLO
Thailand Polo King’s Cup 2008 was arranged from 27th January
to 2nd February at VR Sport Club, Bang Bor, Samut Phrakarn.
There were 5 teams entered in this competition including Thailand,
Dubai, Brunei, Australia and USA. This was the first time that the
USA has ever sent a team and played in Thailand.
Group A
Thailand Players: Lucas Lujan, Gustavo Yanez, Santos Anca, Aiyawatt
Raksriaksorn. Dubai Players: Ali Albwardy, Najieb Khoorhy, Martin
Valent, Gabriel Iglesias. USA Players: Tom Claytor, Eric Barthe,
Marco Focaccia, Adolfo Casabal.
Group B
Brunei Players: Yam P.A. Rahim Kemaluddin, Ignacio Bilbao, Gonzalo
Bourdieu, Gonzalo Fucci. Australia Players: Supanee Lourvanij,
Federico Potobsky, Satar Khan, Matias Orlando.
On 2nd February in the semi-finals between Australia and Dubai,
Australia tried their best to attack on sturdy horses in the first two
chukkas. However, on the 3rd and 4th chukka Dubai pulled back their
game and ran a powerful defensive game. They eventually claimed a
victory over Australia with 7 - 6 the score. After this match, there
followed performances of racing between man and horse, then
Bentley and horse on the polo field, which grabbed everyone’s
attention. The final was between Thailand and Brunei. With a handicap
of 11 against Brunei’s 12, Thailand was given one point to lead initially
1 - 0. In the opening game Brunei attacked ferociously with Thailand
replying in true form. Both teams took defensive and offensive games
to their opponents. It was a one goal game going into the 6th and final
chukka, and then Thailand kept their cool and scored an additional
goal to secure the victory as the time ran off the clock. Thailand won
the King’s Cup 2008 for sixth straight year in the row.
