In the first of our ‘Hough To...’ essential lighting guides, professional photographer Christian Hough walks us through
a simple portraiture set-up using the unique Ringlite Converter accessory and explains how to create that special

Using The Ringlite Creatively
“The Ringlite Converter is a great addition to any set-up and
doesn’t just have to be used in the traditional ringflash way.
Using it off the camera’s axis opens up a whole new area of
creative use and the light it provides is very unique. One of
the things I like about off axis flash, is the ability to easily
avoid the usual hot spot that can be associated with
traditional reflectors. If your subject has shiny skin and you
don’t have a make-up artist to hand it will really benefit you,
plus it will drastically cut down on your post processing time!
It works wonders by producing a perfectly even light with
nicely defined shadows, which will help give shape to your
subject”.
What Makes This Shot Work?
“What makes the image work for me is the reflection in the
glasses. I always try to use round light sources if possible
when shooting beauty work. Using a reflective umbrella or a
Wafer Hex softbox wouldn’t have worked so well in this
situation, as the reflection in the glass would have been too
distracting. The Ringlite Converter fitted the bill perfectly
though, as it produces a smaller, cleaner and more
interesting reflection”.
