DISSOLUTION
DEAR GABRIELE
Two years ago I formed a Civil Partnership with
my now ex-boyfriend. Unfortunately, we are now
talking about seeking a divorce. Could you please
let me know how straight forward this is? We
didn’t do a pre- civil partnership agreement, but I
am hoping that we didn’t need one. Do I have any
fi nancial responsibilities to him?
Steven
DEAR STEVEN
As you have been in a registered civil partnership for over
one year you are entitled to dissolution (not divorce). In
order to be able to petition for dissolution you must be
able to prove one of four facts; unreasonable behaviour,
separation for two years with consent, separation for
fi ve years, or desertion. Please note that adultery is not a
ground for dissolution as it is with divorce, although the
BULLY FOR YOU
fact of adultery could be used to support the ground for
unreasonable behaviour.
The actual procedure for obtaining dissolution is the same
