Broadening our horizons
It is six years ago that Jamie Mitchell and I met. We were in a car heading for WIRE Düsseldorf
– a journey during which, I seem to recall, Jamie was nursing something of a hangover. Of
course, as is becoming of a recently appointed advertising director, to say nothing of father of
three, he’s put that sort of thing behind him these days…!
There wasn’t a lot of conversation on that road trip. There has been an awful lot since, mainly
focused on how to transform a UK trade magazine to a publication that truly reflected the
European fastener and fixing industries - its players, its interests and the global forces impacting
it. It’s a working partnership that I have greatly enjoyed, and Jamie’s directorship is recognition
of a crucial contribution to this magazine that often goes unseen.
One thing we both realised very quickly was that this is a ‘people industry’ and that there
would be no substitute for visiting businesses and events personally, meeting people face-to-
face and absorbing some of the rich knowledge base they collectively possess. As a result we
have clocked up some serious miles in the last six years, stretching our boundaries further and
further. One important result has been a unique network of news partners – in the USA, in
Russia and the Ukraine, in China and Taiwan - invaluable in broadening our horizons and
contributing to the understanding of an increasingly complex world market.
John Wolz, editor at FastenerNews.com in Portland, Oregan deserves a special mention – his
example as an experienced journalist and contributions to this magazine were invaluable in
helping me to come to terms with the disciplines of an adopted profession, for which I
certainly had no formal training.
