On the night
The Agrow Awards 2007
For this, our inaugural Agrow Awards, it has to be admitted
that even the Agrow team itself was astonished at the
success of the event. No-one in attendance could deny that
the ceremony was a big hit, with industry leading figures
joining with emerging players to celebrate the achievements
of the crop protection industry over the last year.
Host Gyles Brandreth ensured that people were kept
laughing and performed admirably in pronouncing the at
times verbally challenging shortlist and award winners. Many
of Gyles’ side comments will be remembered for years to
come and though not all of them may be repeated here, he
certainly made for a hugely entertaining compere. Indeed,
members of the Agrow Awards team themselves were not
safe from his comical outbursts with Agrow Intelligence
Editor Dr Maxwell Davies receiving particular attention.
Representatives of the German Crop Protection Pest Control
Although all awards were received with great enthusiasm,
and Fertiliser Association
the most animated in their celebrations (accompanied with
cheers and energetic applause) was the Food for Life! team,
winners of the Best Public Outreach Programme, with
many group photographs being taken on stage after the
ceremony.
Perhaps the biggest achievement on the night
was DuPont’s hat-trick of awards for Best R&D
Pipeline, Most Innovative Chemistry and Best Novel
Agricultural Biotechnology. Indeed, Gyles Brandreth
was not above pointing out that winning this amount
of awards was perhaps being a little greedy!
Jonathan Shoham, Head of Business Intelligence for
Syngenta expressed the opinion of winners and non-
winners alike when he said ‘it was a memorable and
most enjoyable evening’.
The awards ceremony concluded with the presentation
of the Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by
Plant Impact, to Dr Bob Holm. Dr Holm said it was
‘one of the highest tributes’ he had received in his
career and added that it held a special significance as
it encompassed his ‘30 years in the crop protection
industry and is an award on a global basis’.
By the end of the night, no-one was in doubt that the
event had been a huge success and Agrow would
like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who
attended for making it such a special night.
