As we go to print England are through to the Final of
the Rugby World Cup and are trying to attempt the
impossible. Can they really beat South Africa and be
the only team in the history of the World Cup to take
back to back titles? Or will the Southern Hemisphere
prise the famous trophy from the North? Only time
will tell. The success of this tournament, hosted
magnificently by France with additional games also
played in Wales and Scotland, and the excitement
and competitiveness of the games has created a
resurgence in interest in rugby that can only have a
great knock on effect for Spoon.
Former French skipper, Jean Pierre Rives once said
“When rugby was created there were friends and a
ball. Take away the ball but you still have friends.”
Wooden Spoon plays its game with and without the
ball and the friendships are abundant and growing.
So many people have supported Spoon around the
World Cup, hosting benefiting events and fundraising
lunches and dinners. We hope these friendships will
continue to blossom long after the action of the
World Cup is over.
It has been a busy quarter for Spoon not least
because of the World Cup, but the continued growth
and expansion of the charity ensures more events,
more sponsors, more activities, more funds and more
projects. We alluded to record profits for the year to
March 31 2007 in the last edition and the audited
accounts verify that another record year has been
achieved. With success and growth also comes more
changes and Spoon is sorry to be losing the
corporate sponsorship of Lloyds TSB Asset Finance Contents
Division. A tribute to their support can be found on
