t is said that scuba diving was invented in the
Caribbean – and when you discover the magnificence
of this underworld, you won’t be surprised.
Nearly all the countries and islands offer a good
level of diving – but several stand out for their
world-class conditions.
Belize boasts the world’s second-longest Great Barrier
Reef stretching the length of the country’s coastline – a
whopping 175 miles – and numerous other dive sites at
offshore atolls.
The Bahamas is another prime diving spot and also
boasts its own 140-mile barrier reef, the world’s third
longest, off the coast of Andros.
But it is the range of diving offered here, from shark
diving and wreck dives to exploring mysterious blue
holes, diving with dolphins and examining stone ruins off
the island of Bimini that are said to be the remains of the
lost city of Atlantis.
The Cayman Islands are famous for their underwater
attractions, whether it is diving with stingrays in Stringray
City or exploring the famous Bloody Bay Wall which
plunges into the depths. It is also one of the best places
for wreck-diving, along with Bermuda, the British Virgin
Islands and Curacao.
Bonaire is another noted spot, with around 50 dive
sites and a reputation for its pristine reefs and diverse
marine life.
Tobago is known as one of the best dive spots in the
southern Caribbean as its waters are fed by the Orinoco
River, providing rich nutrients that attract a fascinating
selection of marine life.
There is wall diving off the Turks and Caicos islands,
while the waters around Grenada contain the remains
of the Bianca C cruise ship, an underwater volcano and
pretty coral gardens.
Reefs and underwater pinnacles can be found off Saba,
St Eustatius and St Kitts while the Dominican Republic
boasts the largest reef-protected lagoon in the Caribbean.
There is diving to suit every level of experience. It is
also an ideal place to try out or take up the sport. Dive
centres offer tuition courses throughout the region. Many
of them are based at resorts and hotels, a factor that
makes the Caribbean perfect for divers with non-diving
partners and families.
