Small Business? Big Prospects

In light of Welsh Recruitment’s recent inclusion in the NEO ‘Hot 100’ list of successful start-ups, and following the anniversary of our first birthday, we examine the advantages of working for smaller, newer companies and how you can make a difference to their development.

Getting the job

Keep an eye open for any firms in your chosen sector with a local address, and don’t necessarily dismiss them if you haven’t heard of them. There are thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) all over Wales, often hidden away in places you wouldn’t expect. Make the fi rst move – ring the company, and ask if they are looking to recruit. Some smaller businesses can’t afford to advertise so ensure you put yourself out there by sending a CV with a covering letter. If you are lucky enough to land an interview, treat it with the same professionalism as you would any other position you are serious about. Remember, just because the company is new, it doesn’t mean that your prospective employer will be new to the employment process.

Your Contribution

Companies that are in the early stages of their expansion are often keen to utilise their new staff and encourage them to experiment with new ideas. This is your chance to be actively involved in what is for any young business, an exciting time. If you show that you are eager to learn and go that extra mile for a job that you are passionate about, it is likely your boss will notice. Don’t be afraid to offer new ideas and voice your opinion.

Community Spirit and Environment

One of the distinct advantages of working for SMEs is that there tends to be less ‘office politics’. Instead of vying with a colleague for that cut-throat promotion, it is likely that you will be doing different jobs and therefore be important to the company in different ways. You really will be all banding together to work for a common goal. Indeed, it is far less likely that you can make the same immediate difference if you were to come in at entry-level at a large, established firm.

Growth in the Company

SMEs that have managed to make it past the mammoth six month hurdle, and better still, have celebrated their first anniversary are likely to be strengthened by their experiences. They are more likely to take a chance on you and encourage you to move up in the company. Bear in mind that although the firm may be small now, it won’t necessarily stay that way. Be prepared to ride the wave of expansion and embrace all that goes along with it.

And Finally …

SMEs provide vital economic competition for larger companies. There are many opportunities for you to develop in any sector, particularly services, public and manufacturing. With the backing of the Welsh Assembly Government, start-up companies are the driving force behind Wales’ ever increasing economy. So give a small business a chance – you never know, it may lead to something really big.
