Home is where the job is


More and more people are opting to ditch the office and work from home, according to the latest survey by Zurich Insurance.
As many as one in three workers in the UK have worked from home at some point during the last month as a growing number of employers introduce flexible working practices to aid staff retention. The survey reported a growing “popularity of home working rise and rise as both workers and employers seek a better work/life balance”. In a similar survey, employers were urged to address the needs of working mothers. WorkingMums.co.uk found that 90 per cent of mothers find it difficult to get the flexibility they need with 83 per cent complaining that they felt that their skills were not being fully utilised.

Cwmbran beats Bangalore for new IT centre jobs


At a time when it seems that most of Europe’s largest employers are relocating their operations to India, it is refreshing to hear of one that has chosen to create over 200 well paid jobs here in Wales as part of a £30m investment.
Global IT product and services group Sword, based in Lyon, has chosen the 6,600 sq ft Pavilion development in Cwmbran as the location of its new centre for the research and development of new software products.
Recruitment for Senior Managers and Software Developers is now underway. Ieuan Wyn Jones, Minister for the Economy and Transport, told the Western Mail: “I am delighted that Sword has chosen, with the support of the Assembly Government, to locate its new technology centre here in Wales. “When an organisation like Sword decides to locate in Wales it serves to demonstrate to the IT industry that we have the skills, infrastructure and competitiveness to support world-class operations.”
