Welsh Recruitment
The kids are waiting for their exam results – but what will you do next?
August 16th and August 23rd are ringed on calendars throughout south Wales, as Mums anxiously await their children’s exam results. Your kids are ready to take their next step on the career ladder – but are you?
Leanne Waring is centre manger of Pitman Training in Cardiff. “Many of the Mums we work with feel totally unprepared for the modern world of work. Leanne has the following top tips for women who are planning to return to work or who want to kick start their career;
Take time to look back
When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? Are there elements of these plans and dreams that you’d still like to explore?
What’s right for you?
Do you want a part time job to provide you with a little extra money and independence, or are you ready to launch a new career for yourself? Are you happy undertaking ‘unskilled’ work or are you prepared to refresh your skills and learn new ones?
Work experience
Look at your job history to date and write down all of the positions you’ve held, the industries you’ve worked in and the skills you’ve developed.
Life Skills
Make a note of all experience you’ve gained as a Mum and a wife/partner.
Have you been involved in school events, organised your husband’s VAT returns or sat on committees? What skills have you developed that can be transferred into the world of employment?
Gen Up!
Take time to research the job pages of your local paper. Get to know what jobs are on offer and find out more by requesting job descriptions. This will help you to discover what employers are really looking for and whether you can deliver.
Get Skilled Up
Once you’ve decided what kind of job you’re aiming for you need to make sure you have the skills you need. Find out what training centres are close to you and what they have to offer.
Recognising that Mums are busy people, Pitman Training courses are completely flexible. “We offer a selfpaced method of learning without the restrictions of a traditional classroom,” says Leanne. “Our students can choose the study times that suit them best – fitting their learning in around other commitments. And unlike many colleges, where you have to wait for the start of a new term, you can start learning as soon as you are ready and then use your new skills to get back to work.”
Pitman Training has prepared six fact sheets to help women prepare themselves for the world of work.
Subjects include how to write the perfect CV and covering letter, communication skills and dressing for success at interview. Call 029 2034 2020 to receive your free fact pack.
